I would thow into the mix Grant Thornton who i have used, in particular for FSA regulated firms. Otherwise, as others have indicated, i would expect your legal advisers would provide something for free.

We don’t do regular training courses for existing directors – they just get updates on regulatory developments. We do do induction training for new directors and have used a local but well known law firm to provide specific training for directors with little experience of PLC boards. Cost is c £1,000 but it’s one to one personal training for about 3-4 hours with opportunity for the director to ask loads of questions, so I think it’s worth it.

If you have access, PwC’s NED training is very good – usually morning sessions on a range of topics. Otherwise I have a slide deck and take them through the basics, supplemented with discussions with our Auditors. Also Freshfields do some very good guides drafted for NEDs on the range of their duties.

The IoD runs courses and I am told these are good – we have threatened to send newly appointed NEDs on them but eventually settled for some bespoke training from one of our law firms on directors roles and duties both generally and with reference to latest legal “hot topics” such as Heath & Safety and Bribery Act.

For newly appointed executive directors we sent them on the ICSA Director’s Duties course, which they found helpful.
